Marantz PMD620 Recorder: Compact, Durable, and Easy-to-Use |
Article Details
|

The Marantz PMD620 recorder is very small, but still feels solid and sturdy. The small size enables you to slip it into your pocket for convenient carrying, but does not interfere with its functionality. The buttons are the perfect size, even for larger hands, and the display is easy to read. The PMD620 comes with a metal faceplate and microphone guard, which is more resistant to damage than plastic.
In addition to its convenient size, the PMD620 is incredibly easy to use. The recorder takes only a few seconds to start up, and unlike earlier recorders, allows you to record files up to 2TB in size. The control buttons are simple to use and clearly marked on the device, and the file/menu interface allows you to adjust the settings in the file-preset menus. You have the option of saving 3 presents, which enables you to create separate profiles for various recording types.
Possibly the only disadvantage to the Marantz PMD620 recorder is the location of the headphone jack. The jack is oddly place between the two internal mics, which tends to cause a significant amount of noise when monitoring your recording using those mics. This also allows you to hear yourself pressing buttons when using the internal mics, which can be distracting.
Unlike its competitors, the PMD620 comes with a speaker monitor, which means you are not forced to wear headphones or plug the recorder into external speakers in order to review your recording. The PMD620 recorder also accepts cards up to 2TB, and allows you to record files up to that size as well. The battery life is above average, and lasts approximately 4.5 to 5 hours using a pair of AA alkaline batteries. Plus, the recordings sound detailed and clear, especially when using external mics.
Included with the Marantz PMD620:
- Audio y-cable
- USB cable
- AC adapter
- Tripod adapter
- "Handy Strap"
- 512mb SD card
- User Guide in four languages (English, French, Spanish, German)
- CD-ROM version of the User Guide in eight languages (English, French, Spanish, German, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese and Swedish)
Overall, the Marantz PMD620 is a good buy. It produces good sound for its compact size, and is extremely easy to use. The LED display is clear and bright, and the large buttons ensure you will not accidentally press the wrong one during use. The increased storage capacity and speaker monitor set it apart from its competitors, and its above-average battery life is an additional bonus. This is an ideal recorder for podcasting, interviews, or any other on-the-go use. |
